Living Lokai

During the course of the year, Lokai bracelets have become increasingly popular. These bracelets are quite unique and have a really interesting meaning. Not only do they look super cute, but they have a personal meaning, as well. But how can all of this come from one simple bracelet?

Lokai bracelets became popular very quickly. I can't really explain this. Yes, some celebrities have had them, but they don't usually wear them on the red carpet. The purpose is that you can wear them all the time, so they're not too flashy. But, among high schoolers and college students, these bracelets have taken over.

Steven Izen was in his Freshman year at Cornell University when his grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. His world came crashing down. A few days after the diagnosis, he found himself on the beach with his family and friends. He looked around and wondered how everyone was so happy, so calm, so balanced. After years of research and contemplation, the Lokai was born.

The word itself is inspired by the Hawaiian word Lokahi, meaning unity and to blend opposites. The bracelets themselves are clear, squishy, silicon beads with one black and white opaque bead on either side. The black is filled with mud from the Dead Sea, the lowest part of earth. It reminds us that sometimes we have hit a low, but we should remain hopeful. The while is filled with water from Mt. Everest, thei highest place on earth. It reminds us that sometimes we're on top, but we should remain humble. The story behind this is almost as amazing as the meanings.

Years later, the concept has caught on. Many women and menn wear these bracelets to remind themselves to be hopeful when things get tough, and humble when this are going well. The bracelets come in different clolors. There is blue to help the Water Project, Pink to help support the fight against Breast Cancer, Purple to support the Alzheimer's Association, and so on. There are many other colors and various charities that can be found on the Lokai website.

In general, I love these! They're comfortable, fashionable, and have a really great meaning behind them. Now, maybe I'm a sucker for "feel-good" products, but I certainly feel inspired by these.

They can be found in various boutiques, but also online at the Lokai website. They are $18 in these places. My advice, however, is to get one (or two, or three) on Amazon.com. Not only are they cheaper, but there are more colors. There are only the limited time colors on the website. I like that there are different options on a different website. However, if you do that, make sure you are getting a real lokai, not a knock-off, unless that is what you want. If you ship from Amazon, it will arrive in about a week. I think this is a much better option to get a great product.
